The Dynamics of Extratropical Oceanic Cyclones

چکیده

A temperature structure appropriate for maritime areas is employed to find exact solutions to the non-linear quasi-geostrophic omega and vorticity equations, using a procedure similar to that used in a quasigeostrophic model by Sanders (1971). Results are qualitatively similar to those found in the latter model, and thus, are consistent with the traditional baroclinic stability theory. The principal improvement in this new version is the finding that for intensifying storms, the cold tropospheric temperature perturbation also intensifies. This temperature perturbation is crucial to the storm intensification. Thus, we have a consistent physical mechanism which accounts for observed intensification of baroclinic waves. A frictional formulation is developed by solving for the frictionally induced vertical motion, and solving the vorticity equation, which includes both the effects of divergence and dissipation. A check on the validity of the frictional expression is made in connection with a simple thoery of thickness change over low centers. It is m_-_riumaursrcn~~,~-*a~__________~,,,__ nrr~FIUL.--,~

Regional climate model simulations of North Atlantic cyclones: frequency and intensity changes

Frequency and intensity of cyclones over the North Atlantic are investigated using 2 data sets from simulations with the Rossby Centre regional climate model RCA3. The model domain comprises large parts of the North Atlantic and the adjacent continents. RCA3 is driven by ECHAM5OM1 general circulation model data for May to December from 1985 to 2000 and May to December from 2085 to 2100 assuming...

Atmospheric Bridge, Oceanic Tunnel, and Global Climatic Teleconnections

[1] We review teleconnections within the atmosphere and ocean, their dynamics and their role in coupled climate variability. We concentrate on teleconnections in the latitudinal direction, notably tropical-extratropical and interhemispheric interactions, and discuss the timescales of several teleconnection processes. The tropical impact on extratropical climate is accomplished mainly through th...

Multiple satellite observations of cloud cover in extratropical cyclones

[1] Using cloud observations from NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer, and CloudSat-CALIPSO, composites of cloud fraction in southern and northern hemisphere extratropical cyclones are obtained for cold and warm seasons between 2006 and 2010, to assess differences between these three data sets, and between summer and winter cyclones. In both ...

Observed Covariations of Aerosol Optical Depth and Cloud Cover in Extratropical Cyclones

Using NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer aerosol optical depth and total cloud cover retrievals, CloudSat-CALIPSO cloud profiles, and a database of extratropical cyclones and frontal boundary locations, relationships between changes in aerosol optical depth and cloud cover in extratropical cyclones occurring over Northern Hemisphere oceans are examined. A reanalysis data set is ...

Detection of Coherent Airstreams Using Cluster Analysis : Application to an Extratropical Cyclone

Flow in geophysical fluids is commonly summarized by coherent streams (e.g., conveyor belt flows in extratropical cyclones or jet streaks in the upper troposphere). Typically, parcel trajectories are calculated from the flow field and subjective thresholds are used to distinguish coherent streams of interest. This methodology contribution develops a more objective approach to distinguish cohere...

Evolution of Tropical Cyclone Characteristics

The long-term goals are to understand how variabilities in the large-scale atmospheric environment and the internal tropical cyclone structure influence tropical cyclone track and intensity characteristics and define how these influences differ between developing, mature, and decaying tropical cyclones. During the initial stages of tropical cyclone development, structure and track characteristi...
